Data dig: gender gaps, security fears and happy workers
Gender barriers
Only 21 per cent of firms in the construction sector have female representation at director level, Creditsafe’s Women in Business report claims.
Creditsafe data director Drew Fahiya said: “Despite the construction industry attracting women… there’s a significant gap in their progression within the workforce. This isn’t due to a lack of desire or motivation but rather organisational barriers that need to be addressed promptly.”
Weaker security
Budget pressures are causing construction firms to cut corners with security, according to more than half of the site workers surveyed in BauWatch’s Construction Crime Index 2024.
Pension gap
The average annual gender pension payments gap between male and female construction retirees in London is £820 per year, research from fintech firm Raisin Group has found.

More than two-thirds of building and construction workers are happy in their careers, according to a survey from The Futures Group, which analysed Glassdoor data on culture, diversity, work/life balance, senior leadership, compensation and career development.
