The Atlanta Braves are in the driver’s seat now.
Atlanta split their first two games against the division rival New York Mets, but are in an advantageous position now for the rest of the series owing to the rest their bullpen’s been able to get and the fact that the offense is pretty hot right now, with reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. stealing three bags yesterday.
But first, a spot start from Allan Winans is in order, taking the turn of Spencer Strider. He’s got an interesting history with the New York Mets, having been drafted by them in the 2018 MLB Draft and then being taken by Atlanta in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft following the 2021 season.

For Winans, there’s legitimate questions about what type of pitching performance he’s going to deliver today. His first time out against the Mets last season (in Citi Field), he gave the Braves seven innings of scoreless baseball with two walks and nine strikeouts, allowing only four hits and picking up the win. But his very next start was the same week, against those same Mets, and they made up for not scoring against him the first time out: seven runs on nine hits in only 4.1 innings, including two homers.
As a soft-tossing “sequencing and location” guy – Winans’ fastball averaged just 90 mph last season and his most productive pitch was his changeup – Atlanta did him a disservice by having him make back-to-back starts against the same team, giving them additional looks at and the ability to get comfortable against his stuff, and the Braves took the loss for it.

Starting for the Mets is José Quintana, who has quietly become one of New York’s more effective starters, with a 2.61 ERA in his two starts. He’s had some control issues, though, walking six (as compared to eight strikeouts) in his ten and a third innings and has allowed two homers already on the season.
And on the note of homers, several Braves have hit the lefty well in their careers – Ozzie Albies is 6-10 with two homers, Adam Duvall is 3-8 with two homers, and Marcell Ozuna is 10-24 with a homer and a 1.182 OPS against Quintana.
