A simple yet profound conversation between a mother and her 6-year-old daughter has captured the hearts of social media users.
Under the handle @bgreenish, the mom, Brittney, posted footage of the exchange, which has received more than 10 millions views and 2 million likes on TikTok in a matter of days.
In the clip, the daughter asks, “Do you have to have a husband?” to which Brittney replies, “Nope.” The 6-year-old then grins, apparently delighted by the news.
Brittney, 34, spoke to Newsweek about the moment’s unexpected fame and what the conversation showed about her values in parenting.
Brittney said the viral moment stemmed from a lighthearted conversation about kissing.
“I was watching a movie with a kissing scene, which led to a silly conversation about what age you’re allowed to kiss,” she said. “This is why I started recording. Age 40 was her answer!”
While her child’s reaction to her straightforward response was sweet and surprising, for Brittney, the moment didn’t feel out of the ordinary.
“I laughed immediately, and the conversation didn’t really go further than that,” she said. “We often have open conversations, so I never expected this to blow up the way it has.”
Parenting With Love and Freedom
Brittney said her approach to parenting was rooted in fostering confidence and individuality in her children.
“As a mother, I only want my children to be happy,” she said. “I never want them growing up feeling like they have to fulfill any type of role. I am here to guide and support them to the best of my ability, but ultimately, whatever life they choose is up to them. The sky is the limit.”
The video has struck a chord with viewers, sparking conversations about independence, choice and raising children without societal constraints.
“In all seriousness, this is extremely important thing to teach kids, especially little girls,” one user wrote. “They are taught the opposite from a very young age.”
“When I was a kid, I cried myself to sleep because I thought marriage was mandatory for me,” another person shared.
Brittney said the response online has been overwhelmingly positive.
“One person in particular sent me a message to share their story and how my interaction with my daughter has helped heal them and others,” she said. “Seeing strangers coming together on the internet to lift each other up has been incredibly healing for me as well.”
For Brittney, the moment has been a reminder of how the simple things can mean the most.
“I don’t feel like I am doing anything special,” she said. “I am just trying my best to be a parent and teach love and acceptance.”
