The 2024 NFL season just keeps getting worse for the Dallas Cowboys.

Last Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons dropped the Cowboys to 3-5 on the season, leaving Dallas mired in third place in the NFC East. The Cowboys are looking up at both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders in the division, and their playoff hopes are slipping away from them.

The latest bit of news? Dallas might be without starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the rest of the season.

Prescott left Sunday’s loss to the Falcons with a hamstring injury, and the latest reports indicate that the quarterback might undergo season-ending surgery. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Prescott is dealing with a partially torn hamstring, and Cowboys doctors and trainers believe the quarterback needs surgery to repair the injury.

Schefter also reports that Prescott is traveling to New York to meet with a specialist on Monday for another opinion. Should the specialist agree with the need for surgery, that procedure would take place on Wednesday.

Cooper Rush is the Cowboys’ backup, with Trey Lance another option in the quarterback room for the Cowboys.

Speaking with the media after the loss to Atlanta, Prescott indicated that he “[f]elt something I’ve never felt.

“I felt it when I was getting up from the run. I can’t even say that I felt it running,” Prescott added. “The tackle, maybe something on the tackle. Yeah, I don’t know. But when I was standing up, I felt something, actually. Didn’t think it was much. You get tired. It’s a physical game. A lot of times you feel different things and they kind of go away.”

Sources told ESPN that Prescott suffered a “partial avulsion” of his right hamstring, which means part of the tendon has pulled away from the bone.

Dallas hosts Philadelphia on Sunday. The Cowboys have a pair of games remaining against both the Eagles and the Commanders, meaning the division is still a possibility.

However, it seems unlikely Prescott will be in the lineup for them during those games.
