A Mutare woman who assaulted her baby on video that went viral has pleaded insanity in court after her hearing. The woman was arrested after a video in which she was beating her 10-month-old baby went viral.

According to the video, the woman laid her baby face down on the floor and proceeded to strike the child multiple times with a stick. As the infant endured the attack, the mother ordered her to crawl, capturing the harrowing moments on video. The footage was later sent to the baby’s father.

According to her statement afterwards, she was training her baby to crawl. She also shared that her baby daddy was not paying maintenance for their child.

The incident became public when the video went viral across various social media platforms, prompting a swift response from concerned citizens and authorities. The police were notified, and an investigation was launched into the assault.

The woman was apprehended and brought before the court, where she immediately entered a guilty plea. During the mitigation phase, she explained her actions by claiming to suffer from a mental health condition. However, she did not disclose specific details about the nature of her illness.

The court, taking into account her plea, remanded her in custody until October 30, 2024. Before any final judgment is made, the accused will undergo an assessment by two medical professionals in accordance with the Mental Health Act to determine the legitimacy of her mental health claims.

Pending Charges

The woman is facing serious legal consequences as she has been charged with violating the Children’s Protection and Adoption Act. This law is in place to safeguard the rights and welfare of minors, and her actions, if proven to be carried out with criminal intent, could lead to severe punishment.
