The traditional bouquet toss took an unexpected turn for one bride and her assembled guests at a U.K. wedding last month.

Fern Adelle Ditchburn could only look on and laugh at her wedding at Charlton Hall in Alnwick, Northumberland, northeast England, in June, as her efforts to honor a familiar tradition took an altogether unexpected turn.

When it comes to wedding traditions, the bouquet toss is one that, despite the passing of time, remains as popular as ever.

In a YouGov survey of 700 U.S. adults, 66 percent of respondents were in favor of continuing to honor this particular tradition, with just 11 percent keen on it being scrapped.

Ditchburn will certainly never forget her bouquet toss, though not necessarily for the reasons she might have expected.

A video posted to TikTok by her cousin Stacey May captured the moment the bride’s bouquet was intercepted by the most unlikely of recipients: her 7-year-old nephew, Carter.

In the clip, Ditchburn can be seen throwing the flowers back behind her head. However, she ends up putting a little too much into the throw. The bouquet flies over the heads of most of the female guests vying for it and straight into young Carter’s arms.

The wedding bouquet toss goes wrong. Things took an unexpected turn during the traditional favorite, one bride told Newsweek.

What follows is like something out of an NFL playbook, with Carter setting off at speed and, rather impressively, dodging attempted tackles from as many of as four female guests.

One woman makes a desperate lunge for Carter and the flowers, but it’s to no avail. Watching on, Stacey May told Newsweek she found the whole thing hilarious, particularly as Carter happens to be her son.

“He had never experienced a bouquet toss before. So when he saw the ladies chasing him, he ran as fast as he could,” May said.

Ditchburn, for her part, was initially unaware of what had happened. “I didn’t actually realize he caught it until I saw my bridesmaid shouting his name chasing him,” she said.

Though it looked like he escaped with the bouquet in the end, Carter’s mom said that the flowers were eventually handed over to a more-appreciative guest.

It may not have been what she was expecting, but Ditchburn still loved her bouquet toss and her nephew’s unique contribution to their big day.

“I found it hilarious; everyone at the wedding was laughing, and Carter loved being chased for it,” Ditchburn said.

“It was a core memory of the day. I don’t think a single guest there will forget my bouquet toss for a very long time.”
