Some days Wordle can be trickier than others so if you’re struggling with today’s puzzle, Newsweek is here to help.

The game proved a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic when it was uploaded online by New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle. He had created the game for his crossword-loving partner and within three months of going live, it was a huge success.

Wordle went public on November 1, 2021, and had 300,000 users on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times then purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Writers at the Times conducted an expansive analysis of 515 million Wordle games with surprising results, such as that one in every 250 games is guessed on the first attempt, which is more than can be explained by chance.

“This is much more often than you’d expect if you just left things to chance, although not necessarily every case is outright cheating,” said authors Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia. “Some may be using a new window to make additional guesses after failing to solve the puzzle in six tries.

“Some may be re-entering a solution they found on a different device to maintain a streak, or to test a technical issue. Others may have had the answer spoiled, or, yes, may have looked it up.”

Since Wardle uploaded the game to the internet, over 1,000 daily puzzles have been solved by players around the globe. With enough possible answers in the game’s word bank to last until late 2027, fans still have plenty more puzzles to solve.

The premise of the game is simple. A new five-letter word appears every day on the Wordle app or website, and players need to guess it in six attempts or fewer. You begin by putting in the word you think it might be, and a color-coded tile system will tell you what you got right and what you didn’t as the letters flip over to give you the results.

A green tile means the letter is correct; yellow tells you it appears in the word but is in the wrong spot; and, finally, a gray tile shows that the letter does not appear in the word at all.
