Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Rolando “Rolly” Romero entered the ring at Barclays Center in New York on Saturday with undefeated records and dozens of knockouts between the two of them.
Davis, ESPN’s third-ranked men’s lightweight, looked to defend his WBA “regular” title, while Romero fought for a world title for the first time in his career.
Ahead of the bout, Rolly didn’t shy away from expressing how he felt about Tank. Davis stated that this would be the last fight of his multiyear deal with Mayweather Promotions.
“Floyd did a great job with him,” Romero told ESPN. “Without Floyd, Gervonta Davis is nothing. He may still have his skill set and all this, you know. But as far as marketing, he has zero personality.
“He doesn’t do anything to help the sport of boxing,” he continued.
The tension between them was visible during their pre-fight news conference.
When they finally met in the ring on Saturday they traded blows for six rounds in a back-and-forth affair.
In the end, Davis was victorious by way of technical knockout.
New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu, Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant and others were tuned in and shared their thoughts on the fight.
