One woman is dead and a three-month baby is missing after a Greenhorse bus plunged into a flooded river in Mawaza, Gwanda South.
The bus which was carrying 75 passengers coming from Gwanda town tried to cross the flooded river and was swept away.
Police Confirms the Accident
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena, confirmed the incident which happened on Monday at around 3 PM.
“On 23 December 2024, at about 3 PM, a Green Horse bus with 75 passengers on board attempted to cross a flooded Mletshane River. Unfortunately, the front-left wheel of the bus missed the bridge, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river, and it was swept away,” she said.
The incident claimed one life, and a three-month-old baby is still missing. One passenger, identified as 33-year-old Sthembinto Dube of Mawaza Village in Gwanda District, died on the spot. The baby girl remains unaccounted for and is feared to have drowned.

The accident has sparked outrage from Zimbabweans as they blamed the driver for being irresponsible and being reckless. Netizens argued that the accident could have been avoided.

Rimbi Bus Catches Fire
Meanwhile, a Rimbi bus reportedly caught fire in Mt Darwin and burnt down. Pictures showing the bus burning in flames have since emerged on social media.
Netizens bemoaned how Rimbi buses always get involved in accidents or caught fire. Social media users called on the government to ban Rimbi bus company.
