Kamaru Usman gets called out by the surging UFC welterweight Daniel Cormier urged him to avoid

Kamaru Usman returned to the UFC welterweight title picture in Atlanta.

It had been close to four years since Usman had his hand raised inside the Octagon. That victory drought finally came to an end this past Saturday night at State Farm Arena.

In the main event of UFC Atlanta, Usman dominated Joaquin Buckley to return to winning ways and reinsert his name into the championship conversation at 170 pounds.

When it comes to his next step, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has been clear in calling for a title shot. While that mindset has seen Usman dismiss Belal Muhammad as an option, ‘Remember the Name’ is not the only contender with the 38-year-old in their sights.

Sean Brady calls to face Kamaru Usman after UFC Atlanta

During a recent episode of his podcast alongside his teammate Joe Pyfer, Sean Brady gave his take on Usman’s latest performance and how it’s affected the top of the weight class.

Currently ranked No. 2 at 170 pounds, Brady is on the hunt for an opponent he can meet in a title eliminator.

With talk of a showdown between Brady and Ian Machado Garry not yet materializing into an official booking, the Philadelphia native instead called out Usman.

“I was number one, now I’m number two,” Brady said. “I’ll fight Usman. He’s a former champion. I think me and him — I would rather do that (than fight Machado Garry).

“Now it makes sense. I’m here for it. … Let’s not wait around. Let’s see who the number one contender is!

“None of us are getting the title shot. … They’re saying Shavkat’s (Rakhmonov) next, then there’s Ian, then there’s Usman,” Brady added. “Usman just beat Buckley, who was seven. I f—— got there (by) beating Leon Edwards, who was number one at the time.”

Daniel Cormier advised Kamaru Usman to steer clear of Sean Brady

Brady’s callout comes just days after Usman was urged to avoid meeting the grappling specialist inside the cage.

The 32-year-old has won three in a row since his sole UFC loss against former champion Muhammad. Most recently, Brady submitted Leon Edwards in London to follow up his triumphs over Kelvin Gastelum and Gilbert Burns.

With Brady’s style and youth in mind, Daniel Cormier told Usman to look elsewhere for his next opponent while speaking on his Good Guy/Bad Guy show.

“What I’m not doing is — I’m looking at the top five, or top three, and going, ‘Which one do I want?’

“You don’t want Sean Brady. Sean Brady is crazy, and he is young,” Cormier added. “It would be like fighting Joaquin Buckley again.”

It seems there is a lot for the UFC matchmakers to figure out when it comes to the welterweight division.

They’ll thankfully have some time before requiring a number one contender, though, thanks to the arrival of lightweight kingpin Islam Makhachev and his expected shot at Jack Della Maddalena’s title.
