Rapper Young Scooter died at the age of 39 after a leg injury caused by running from the police on his birthday, March 28, reports the Atlanta Police Department in a press briefing. The police were called to a home in Atlanta as there were reports of “a dispute with shots fired and a female being dragged back into the residence” and they caught Scooter running out of the house. The police chased him until they eventually caught him, as he sustained an injury on his leg from trying to climb over a fence. He was then transferred to Grady Hospital for further treatment, where he was pronounced dead. An official cause of death has not been announced until an autopsy can be made. Police also said the original call is still considered an active investigation.

Born Kenneth Edward Bailey, he was one of the first rappers to be signed with Future’s record label, Freebandz; the two were childhood friends. However, the next year, Bailey also signed with Waka Flocka Flame’s Brick Squad Monopoly, which is an imprint of Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records. His most recent project, a rerelease of Fast Lane Juugin, premiered in February; it was a remastered edition for the tenth anniversary of the album.

On Instagram Stories, Waka Flocka Flame paid tribute to the late rapper, acknowledging that he died on his birthday. He wrote, “Happy Birthday my brada. Damn I can’t even pop it this year in AAU. Fly high street!!! One of them ones.” Alongside a photo of Bailey, Playboi Carti expressed disbelief, writing “SMFH.” Quavo shared a similar sentiment with broken heart emojis and said that he doesn’t “understand.”
