Angelina Jolie Calls Out ‘Liars’ Amid Brad Pitt Divorce Settlement News
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Angelina Jolie didn’t hold back in her first interview following the news that her divorce from Brad Pitt was finalized — eight years after their split — openly criticizing those she believes are untruthful.
In a cover story for W Magazine, Jolie, 49, is asked if she has any pet peeves.
“So many things,” the Maria actress responds. “But my pet peeve is somebody who is a liar.”
She explains that means, for her, a person “who feels a need to not say the truth or what they want, what they feel.”
“There’s a big version of that — and I’m not trying to be heavy about it — but people who say one thing and mean another, who aren’t completely who they are,” she continues. “I think a lot of people don’t say what they mean.”
Jolie didn’t elaborate further on her pet peeve in the interview, which was released just days after she and Pitt, 61, put an end to their contentious divorce proceedings.
Following the pair signing off on the settlement, James Simon, an attorney for Jolie, said in a statement obtained by NBC News that the actress had been “focused on finding peace and healing for their family” — Maddox, 23, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, Pax, 21, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. His client, he noted, was “exhausted” but also “relieved this one part is over.”
Pitt and his representatives declined to comment on the news when asked by People.
Jolie filed for divorce from the actor — who she met on the set of their film, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, over 20 years ago — in September 2016. According to legal papers, she cited “irreconcilable differences” for the breakdown of their relationship following an incident that she later claimed occurred during a transatlantic flight.
In an October 2022 complaint related to a breach of contract lawsuit Pitt filed against Jolie accusing her of improperly offloading her share of their French winery Château Miraval, NBC News reported the actress accused Pitt of choking one of their six children while they were on a private plane to Los Angeles.
Pitt was never charged with a crime, and the investigation was closed.
“Brad has owned everything he’s responsible for from day one — unlike the other side — but he’s not going to own anything he didn’t do,” the actor’s lawyer said at the time.
While the ex-couple’s divorce is now finalized, Pitt’s lawsuit against Jolie over her Château Miraval sale continues.
