‘Wordle’ #1,072 Clues and Answer for Sunday, May 26 Game
Some Wordle games are harder than others and there is nothing wrong with needing a helping hand to get over the finish line; that is where Newsweek comes in with a few tips and hints to win the game.
The viral game, invented by Josh Wardle, a New York-based software engineer, is simple to follow. Players must guess one five-letter word per day and have six attempts to guess it. If a correct letter is in the right place, the tile will go green. If it is the right letter, but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. If it is not in the word at all, the tile goes gray.
Wardle invented it because he wanted a game “for me and my partner to enjoy” and refined it during the coronavirus lockdowns of 2020.
It then went public on November 1, 2021, and had 300,000 users on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure fee.

Speaking to Newsweek, Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., previously offered some advice for Wordle players.
He said: “One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen. Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful. Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice.
“As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking. For example, if the second letter of the target word is l (indicated by green) and the player feels that the word starts with a consonant, they will need to know that there are only a few consonant cluster possibilities (such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl).”
