Huntersville, NC (RestaurantNews.com) Locally owned eeZ has taken the top prize in Charlotte Five’s Readers’ Choice Best Sushi contest. The beloved neighborhood spot opened its doors at Birkdale Village in 2005.
What sets the sushi at eeZ apart? According to owner Alan Springate, it is the attention and care paid to the group’s carefully chosen seafood purveyors. Longtime partner Hilo Fish Company has been on the list of Top 25 in North America for Seafood Sustainability & Conservation; salmon from partner, Bakkafrost, are sustainably raised and harvested. Scallops, found in the popular All Eyes on You Roll, are sourced from True North, another longtime partner that holds true to the best possible sustainability practices. Quality is always at top of mind, whether it is seafood or any other ingredients.
Originally named eeZ Fusion and Sushi, the concept closed its doors for roughly five weeks in late August of 2022 for an expansion and major renovation, adding square footage to the dining areas, an extra large, modern sushi bar and a sorely needed separate take out entrance. It has been a whirlwind since the doors reopened last fall as the already bustling wee restaurant came back bigger and even better, and right as Birkdale Village itself was newly being redone as a major lifestyle center.
Master Sushi Chef Rifali Almunir and Head Sushi Chef Son Nuygen have led the sushi team through its many phases over the years, with Head Chef Tyler White joining the team just after the redo in 2022. Items on the sushi side of the menu are often times a collaboration between both Chef Son and Chef Fali. Both chefs have multiple signature items on the eeZ menu; Chef Fali is responsible for the poke bowl selections and Chef Son designed two of their most popular rolls, the Tropical Storm and the Scorching Son. Chef Tyler’s Singapore Street Noodles, while not sushi, are a new and a can’t miss gluten free option.
In the past few months eeZ has also added a handful of enticing new cocktails, created by Assistant General Manager, Ryan Selman. In the mix are the Pink Lotus, a martini made with Bacardi, freshly squeezed lemon juice, house made hibiscus syrup and egg white and The Geisha, a cocktail with Smirnoff Vodka, Domaine de Canton, cherry juice, ginger beer and ginger sticks. The Strawberry Sour is the perfect summer sip with Jameson Whiskey, strawberry tea syrup, freshly squeezed lime juice and egg white.
eeZ is the sister concept to The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar, found in Charlotte at SouthPark, in Raleigh at North Hills and at Universal’s CityWalk in both Orlando and Beijing.
