Scaffolder disqualified over £200k unpaid tax
A scaffolder has been given a six-year disqualification order by the High Court, after the Insolvency Service found he had failed to pay £209,000 worth of business and employee-related tax in 2016-17.
The order prevents him from serving as a company director.
Vincent Larkin, of Bracknell, was the director of scaffolding company V Larkin, which traded as Olympic Scaffolding.
This company went into liquidation in May 2019, which triggered an investigation by the Insolvency Service.
Investigators found Larkin had failed to make the £209,000 tax payment and later that he had made payments totalling close to £489,000, but none to the tax authorities.
He did not attend court, and was disqualified in his absence and ordered to pay costs of £7,355.80.
Insolvency Service deputy head of company investigations Lawrence Zussman said: “As a company director, Vincent Larkin had a duty to ensure the scaffolding firm declared and paid the correct amount of taxes due.
“Our enquiries, however, clearly showed that Vincent Larkin systematically abused the tax authorities when the scaffolders failed to pay more than £200,000 of tax.
“This type of behaviour from a company director is deplorable and we will not hesitate in taking action against tax abuse.”
