The Tonight Show has been airing since the early 1950s and has had numerous hosts over the decades. Steve Allen was the first, who gave way to Jack Paar before Johnny Carson took over for decades. After Carson, Leno became host of the NBC staple after a controversial decision by the network, as most viewers thought the position would be filled by David Letterman, who then went to work for CBS.

From 1992 to 2014, Leno interviewed countless famous faces including William Shatner, Billy Crystal, Halle Berry, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis and former President Barack Obama.

In February 2014, Leno shared his goodbyes during his final show.

“This has been the greatest 22 years of my life,” he said tearfully, “I am the luckiest guy in the world. I got to meet presidents, astronauts [and] movie stars, it’s just been incredible.”

“It’s fun to kind of be the old guy and sit back here and see where the next generation takes this great institution and it really is, it’s been a great institution for 60 years. I am so glad I got to be a part of it, but it really is time to go and hand it off to the next guy,” he continued.

The current Tonight Show host is Jimmy Fallon.

Fans also sent Leno wishes of a fast healing under Schneider’s tweet.

“Praying for a speedy recovery! Thank goodness the accident wasn’t worse. Every day is a gift. Love & support one another,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another tweeted, “Get better Jay!!”

“We are all pulling for Jay to have a quick recovery,” a user added.

One said, “Legends one and all! Get well Jay!”

“Love Jay Leno! Thoughts & prayers for a complete and speedy recovery,” another wrote.

“I feel bad for him. I like that guy. I’m sure he will be OK but that sucks. Hang in there Jay,” another Twitter user said.

Newsweek has reached out to representatives for Leno and Schneider for comment.
