Bouygues UK has been confirmed as the preferred contractor for a new integrated eye hospital in central London.

Yesterday, health bodies involved in the scheme announced the approval of the business plan for the scheme, as well as funding from both the NHS and central government.

The new facility, named Oriel, is being developed as part of the government’s new-hospitals programme, which is billed as delivering 40 new facilities across the UK by 2030.

Natalie Forrest, senior responsible owner for the New Hospital Programme, said: “This state-of-the-art facility will transform eye care and health for people across the country, and I’m delighted that Oriel has today been granted approval to move forward, enabling construction to start.

“This funding will enable the team to further improve the outstanding care they provide, offering a modern environment for clinical and non-clinical staff, patients and visitors.”

The building will bring together services run by UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Eye Charity on the site of St Pancras Hospital next to Kings Cross Station.

In a statement, the partners said that Bouygues had developed a full construction programme, with the building due to open in 2027.

It is understood that ISG and Mace had also been in the running for the job but were unsuccessful, and that Bouygues was appointed as the preferred contractor earlier this year.

The scheme was granted full planning permission by London Borough of Camden in August.

The proposals include the demolition of seven buildings and the construction of a part-seven-storey and part-10-storey facility.

Bouygues currently has planning permission for enabling works in with the planning authority, including the demolition of a perimeter wall at the site and the relocation of an electricity substation.
