Wordle #456 Clues, Hints and Answer for Sunday, September 18 Puzzle

Wordle can be a struggle for even long-time players to find the correct answer to.

A play on the name of its creator, software engineer Josh Wardle, work on the online puzzle began in 2013 and was finished the COVID-19 lockdown, with help from Wardle’s partner Palak Shah.

When it was released online at the end of 2021, it was played by a few dozen people a day. But it soon became an online sensation, attracting millions of regular players—and that reach has continued to grow since it was acquired by The New York Times Company for an undisclosed sum earlier this year.

Now it’s a daily habit for millions of people around the world, who take a few moments out of their day to solve the day’s puzzle.

The premise is simple: one five-letter word per day and six attempts to guess it.

A color-coded system tells players when they have correctly guessed a letter in the word. If the letter is in the right place, the tile turns green, if it is in the wrong place, it turns yellow and if the letter is not in the word at all, the tile goes gray.

Wardle previously told Newsweek that he liked the idea that “everyone around the world was trying to solve the exact same word at the exact same time.”

He said: “It created a shared communal experience [If] there were multiple puzzles to solve and everyone was at a different stage, then there wouldn’t be that kind of conversation, which I think is the most fulfilling part of Wordle.”

But the limited number of guesses available to solve each day’s puzzle means it is important to be strategic. It’s always best to start with a word that is rich in vowels, say “audio,” or “adieu,” and avoid less common letters like X, Q and Z until you have a better sense of what the answer could be.

The answer resets every day, so players only have 24 hours to guess each day’s word and retain their Wordle win streak.

Below, Newsweek has provided some hints (and if all else fails, the answer) to help Wordle fans retain their hard-earned win streaks.
