A woman was taken into custody on Monday afternoon following reports that three individuals were shot near a busy retail and dining center in Atlanta.

In an email sent to Newsweek, a spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department confirmed that a female suspect was apprehended by officers after reports of a shooting.

The arrest came shortly after police were first called to 1280 W. Peachtree Street in midtown Atlanta at around 1:45 p.m. ET.

“Upon arrival, officers located two individuals who appeared to have been shot. One of the victims has died and the second was taken to the hospital for treatment,” the spokesperson told Newsweek.

Shortly after, officers were called to reports of another person shot at 1100 Peachtree Street. “Upon arrival there, officers located 1 individual who appeared to have been shot. The individual was taken to the hospital for treatment,” police said.

Prior to the suspect being taken into custody, the Atlanta Police Department said that “initial information indicates an unknown female is responsible for these incidents.”

“Multiple officers responded to the Midtown area and began searching for the female suspect. It is unclear whether the suspect remained in the area or has left. Investigators are following up on all leads in an effort to locate the suspect,” police said at the time.

Police also said that they believed the last gunshot was fired at around 2:15 p.m. local time.

Following the arrest of the woman, police said that they are continuing to investigate the information surrounding the incident and said that it is currently unclear what led to the shooting.

“We are investigating the connection between the locations….We are working to determine whether the victims were targeted by the suspect or whether any of the victims were shot randomly,” police said.

Twitter user Brian Moote shared a photo of a woman who was wearing similar clothing to the suspected shooter. “Just got off a flight at ATL airport and it looks like they have the suspect in the midtown shooting in custody,” the tweet said. Newsweek has been unable to independently verify if the woman in the tweet was the suspected shooter.

According to WGCL-TV in Atlanta, before the suspect was taken into custody, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority sent an alert to employees regarding the shooting and shared a photo similar to the one police released of the suspect.

Videos posted on social media earlier on Monday showed a large police presence near Atlanta’s Colony Square, which offers residents a number of dining and shopping options.
